COVID-19 Weekend Update: Cases Rise in Nashville Metropolitan Area’s Three Largest Counties

The total number of COVID-19 cases reached 7,901 in the Nashville metropolitan area’s three largest counties on Sunday, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.

Davidson, Rutherford and Williamson counties reached a combined total of 453 new cases of COVID-19 since June 5, Tennessee health officials said. Of the additional 453 confirmed cases, 285 cases are in Davidson County, 136 cases are in Rutherford County and 32 cases are in Williamson County.

As of June 5, Davidson County has performed a total of 1,758 tests for COVID-19, of which 16.2 percent were positive. Friday’s numbers show the largest single-day spike of performed tests in Davidson County, with an increase of nearly 62 percent.

Rutherford County has performed a total of 701 tests for COVID-19 since Friday, of which 19.4 percent were positive. Williamson County saw the lowest recorded totals with 382 tests performed, of which 8.4 percent yielded a positive result, the data shows.

The latest health data was analyzed by Ken Blake, an MTSU data journalism professor. His analyses show that despite the counties’ upward trends of confirmed coronavirus cases, the number of negative tests exceeds those of positive results in all three counties.

Beginning June 1, Rutherford County records an average 37 positive tests and 206 negative tests per day, the data shows. Williamson County records an average 9 positive tests and 142 negative tests per day, and Davidson County records the most significant contrast with a daily average of 96 positive tests and 605 negative tests.

Rutherford County saw its largest single-day increase of positive COVID-19 tests since June 1 on Friday, with an additional 33 confirmed cases within 24 hours. The number of positive tests in both Rutherford and Davidson counties declined over the weekend.

Friday’s numbers also show the first single-day decline of positive COVID-19 tests in Williamson County since the beginning of the month. However, the number of positive tests in the county steadily increased over the weekend by around five per day.

The number of positive COVID-19 tests accounts for 5.6 percent of the 22,630 total tests performed in Tennessee since Friday. The total number of COVID-19 cases rose to 26,381 statewide on Sunday, the Tennessee health department confirmed.
